This mural celebrating wonderful women and fabulous femmes has had a really fun content generating process. We started off with an open mic style event where people were able to nominate whomever they believed should be featured in the mural. People nominated someone and shared a story or another creative expression and we ended up with 43 nomination of women, femmes, and groups of women or femmes, it was incredible to hear people from Buffy St. Marie to Octavia Butler to the Bennett Belles during the Civil Rights Movement be nominated and to hear about the ways they inspire so many people. Women and femmes are a wonder to this world. From there we narrowed it to 12 people and it went to a public vote and a final four became apparent.
From such an unusual ideation process we now have started this mural, with many people invested in its success, including the people to be painted in it. Those people are Miss Major Griffin-Gracey, Jessie Barber, Micky Bradford, and Bree Newsome.
The silhouettes, house, and cowrie shells are representations of the other 8 people who were part of the voting process. They are Juliana Huxtable, Leila Khaled, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Buffy St. Marie, Michelle Howard, Joyce Johnson, Dorothy Brown and Cynthia Brown.
This mural was designed and lead by Terri Jones and Gloria Williams, and installed at The People’s Perk.
